  • Gundersen Supports Education at Vesterheim

  • Barnetimen (Children’s Hour)
    up is necessary come to one session or all of them The program is geared toward 3 5 year olds but all ages are welcome Meet first at ArtHaus Studio at 516 W Water St visit the museum and then head back to ArtHaus for an art project Barnetimen is sponsored this year by Brenda and David Carlson Keith and Amy Bruening and Norwegian Mutual Insurance Association Jenni and Eric Petersen Brant are co directors of ArtHaus downtown Decorah s home for the arts Both are practicing studio artists with extensive experience in arts administration and arts education Jenni holds an MFA from the University of Nebraska Lincoln and a BFA from the University of Wisconsin Whitewater and has worked as the Executive Director of the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts and Education Director for LUX Center for the Arts Largely a self taught artist Eric holds a BS from the University of Nebraska Lincoln and extensive post graduate education in the arts He has taught with LUX Center for the Arts Doane College and independently while also being studio assistant to artist Eddie Dominguez For information about Barnetimen please contact Jennifer Kovarik Vesterheim Youth Educator at 563

    by Kari Gronningsæter and Nick Preus in the museum s Bethania Church on Mill Street Hear the tale of this voyage around the world in 1913 1914 based on the letters and journals of Gronningsæter s grandmother The ship a full rigger captained by Gronningsæter s great grandfather sailed to Australia loaded with timber and returned to Norway loaded with wheat On the way home in the Atlantic they found out that WW I had started 11 30 a m Guided tour of the buildings in the Open Air Division 12 30 1 00 p m Gather for Children s Parade at the Winneshiek County Courthouse on Main Street 1 00 p m Children s Parade through Decorah led by Decorah s Nordic Dancers The route starts on Main Street at the Winneshiek County Courthouse then travels north along Washington Street to Water Street then west on Water Street to Mill Street Everyone is invited to march along or cheer from the sidewalks Norwegian flags will be provided for everyone marching 1 20 2 00 p m Vesterheim welcome and Decorah s Nordic Dancers perform on Mill St at the museum 2 00 p m Guided tour of the buildings in the Open Air Division 2 30 p m and 3 30 p m Concerts by Decorah Youth Choirs in the museum s Bethania Church on Mill Street Decorah Youth Choirs will perform their Spring Concert at two different times as part of Vesterheim s Syttende Mai celebrations this year More than 75 pre K through 9th grade singers from local communities participate in DYC s four choirs With songs from Norway America and around the world this concert should be a lovely way to welcome spring 4 00 6 00 p m Street dance with Decorah s popular Scandinavian

  • Pioneer Immersion Program
    use artifacts archival materials and hands on activities to gain a better understanding of what it meant for immigrants to journey from their homelands and establish new lives in America The program includes instruction in the school classrooms and a series of Vesterheim visits in which students explore the museum and participate in several pioneer activities Students look forward to the Vesterheim Immersion Program every year Karen Van Der Maaten fourth grade teacher at Carrie Lee Elementary School in Decorah said It gives them an opportunity to experience what life was like as an immigrant in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries The hands on activities and projects make history come alive for the students she explained Prior to their visits to the museum the students create immigrant identities for themselves using immigrant diaries documents and other sources The students record their impressions and thoughts in their own journals as they take part in packing an immigrant trunk constructing a log home and completing a series of typical chores Along with their journals students create projects related to immigrant and pioneer history and they often enlist the help of parents grandparents and other family and friends in doing so making it a valuable intergenerational experience The Pioneer Immersion Program is the optimal blend of object based learning national education standards local curricula and fun said Jennifer Kovarik Vesterheim s Youth Educator The teachers and museum staff begin with the common goal of providing student centered activities and the result has been positive and engaging concrete experiences that facilitate critical thinking and creativity Iowa school districts that have participated in the program in the past include Decorah Community Schools North Winneshiek School Trinity Catholic School in Protivin St Benedict School in Decorah and Notre Dame Catholic School in Cresco For more information

  • Spinning and Weaving Presentations by Martha Owen and Elizabeth Johnston
    in Brasstown North Carolina Her adventure in spinning began at the school in 1978 Since then her extended family has included sheep Corriedale Shetland Romney and Angora rabbits French As a banjo player and storyteller Martha s interest in sheep and wool music and dance has carried her literally and joyfully around the world She is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and is co owner of Yarn Circle in Murphy North Carolina Elizabeth Johnston Sheltano United Kingdom is a Shetland spinner and knitter She learned much of her craft as a child observing and receiving lessons from family and friends She uses these age old skills handed down through generations to turn Shetland fleece into beautiful soft yarns and Fair Isle and lace items for her business Shetland Handspun Interest in the long history of Shetland textiles led to research into historic fabrics and the warp weighted loom She is author of two chapters in Shetland Textiles 800 BC to the Present edited by S Laurenson Elizabeth has demonstrated lectured and taught workshops in spinning lace and Fair Isle knitting throughout Europe and the United States Related Spinning and Dyeing June 9 10 2016 with Martha Owen
