  • Traveling Exhibitions
    rituals in Norway in the nineteenth century The variety of artifacts within each theme shows visitors that the symbols were used broadly each day and especially during life changing rituals The exhibition is divided into four themes based on the functions of the symbols used on Norwegian folk art Symbols that attracted good forces good luck or good blessings solar and rayed motifs seasonal and rotating motifs Symbols that promoted fertility of the family the flocks and the fields fertile field with seeds hooked rhombs lozenges horns and spirals Symbols that protected the family the farm farm animals and farm products zigzags knots locks chains of opposites Symbols that linked people to the spirit world deities and the sky earth trees of life equal armed crosses goddesses birds horses deer This traveling exhibition is based on one at Vesterheim that was curated by Mary B Kelly Support for the traveling exhibition is provided by Ed Hemphill and from Walmart For an artifact list touring schedule and costs contact Laurann Gilbertson Chief Curator at 563 382 9681 ext 214 or Share This Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Tumblr Share on Google Email this Page Exhibitions Main Building Open

    collections On view May 16 2015 through March 31 2016 Other Vesterheim artifacts and images can be seen in the center s core exhibit Museum of Danish America Elk Horn Iowa Exhibition Skål Scandinavian Spirits This exhibition which explores the role of beer and aquavit as symbols of Scandinavian heritage includes drinking vessels from Vesterheim s collections On view through October 25 2015 The exhibition will then travel to Nordic Heritage Museum Seattle Washington Swedish American Museum Chicago Illinois Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum Decorah Iowa American Swedish Historical Museum Philadelphia Pennsylvania American Swedish Institute Minneapolis Minnesota and Elverhoj Museum Solvang California The Dwight D Eisenhower Library and Museum Abilene Kansas Exhibition Be Ye Men of Valour the Allies of World War II A sampling of Vesterheim artifacts in the exhibition which has been extended through December 2016 include A skein of human hair that was made in Hadeland Norway for knitting socks and darning during the World War II Occupation A matchbook from Little Norway a training camp in Canada for the Royal Norwegian Air Force during WWII A sweater worn by worn by Einar Judén when he was a member of the Norwegian resistance movement during WWII The Mingei International Museum San Diego California Exhibition Made in America A clock with fretwork design made by C A Hendrickson a long time resident of the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah will be displayed with other hand crafted pieces from around the United States in this exhibition September 19 2015 February 21 2016 The Gundersen Clinic Decorah Iowa Gundersen Clinic features a colorful display of clay and paper flowers made by Nordic Fest participants and inspired by Flora Metamorphicae an installation of 4 000 ceramic flowers that were on view at Vesterheim Museum in 2014 Minnekirken the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church

    coordinator of the entire project was Anders Sandvig founder of the Maihaugen collection in Lillehammer Norway Sandvig expressed his purpose in organizing such an effort by writing May these objects work so that the Norwegian ness in you will not die too soon and the connection with the homeland will because of this be tighter Receive this gift as proof that we follow you all in our hearts even though the big Atlantic Ocean parts us Royal Visits To Vesterheim And Decorah May 6 and 7 1939 Crown Prince Olav and his wife Princess Märtha stay in Decorah while on their first United States tour The Crown Prince brings gifts for the Norwegian American Historical Museum now Vesterheim from the National Association of Museums in Norway This group of Norwegian museums not only contributes the artifacts but also donates the funds to cover shipping While the Crown Prince and Princess are in Decorah Luther College confers upon the Crown Prince an honorary degree October 6 1965 Crown Prince Harald who became King Harald V in 1991 visits Vesterheim and Luther College where an honorary degree is conferred upon him May 4 1968 King Olav V visits Vesterheim and Luther College October 14 1975 King Olav V participates in dedication ceremonies at Vesterheim Museum s newly restored Main Building and visits Luther College to lay the cornerstone for the Center for Faith and Life the college s worship center and theater concert hall November 28 1987 King Olav V braves an ice storm to visit Vesterheim Museum and Luther College October 19 1995 Their Majesties King Harald V and Queen Sonja visit Decorah as part of their official diplomatic itinerary June 10 1999 Crown Prince Haakon visits Decorah as part of the city s sesquicentennial celebrations and dedicates Vesterheim s Amdal

    furnishings and jewelry created in Norway and the U S Tours may be tailored to specific topics upon request Check here for temporary exhibitions currently on view at Vesterheim Vesterheim s Open Air Division Available May October Ideal for Grades Pre K to 12 10 15 minutes per building Cost Free with museum admission 2 per student Reservations required There are various historic buildings in the museum s Open Air Division that are available to visit on guided tours Arrangements may be made to visit just a few of the buildings or to visit all of the buildings Please note that these historic buildings are accessible by steps and are not climate controlled Check here to learn more about the buildings in the Open Air Division Special Activities For School and Youth Groups One Room School House Ideal for Grades 2 to 5 1 hour school experience Cost 35 per class does not include museum admission Experience education from an earlier time A schoolmaster will lead students through lessons in the museum s one room schoolhouse Students will use slate boards with chalk for writing and leather scraps for erasers and can wear aprons or shirts that are reminiscent of clothing worn by children in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Students will learn more about the history of this one room schoolhouse practice counting in Norwegian sample sorghum sandwiches and end the session playing nineteenth century recess games weather permitting This program is available in fall spring and summer only Please note that the school house is accessible by steps only and is not climate controlled Immigrant Trunk Ideal for Grades 3 to 5 1 hour presentation Cost 25 per class 2 per student admission What did immigrants bring with them to America in the nineteenth and early twentieth
