    the fall It will air on TV next spring to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the communist takeover of the former South Vietnam Kennedy s theme is the human angle in this sad episode of history She focuses on heroic actions taken by Americans on the ground in Saigon as they tried against overwhelming odds to evacuate South Vietnamese men women and children they believed would be in mortal danger after the North Vietnamese took over the country The most informative and riveting testimony comes from former CIA analyst Frank Snepp one time Army Capt Stuart Herrington former U S Marine Guards Juan Valdez and Mike Sullivan former Navy officers Hugh Doyle and Paul Jacobs and two Vietnamese people left behind a college student named Binh Pho and former South Vietnamese Navy Lt Dam Pham along with Kiem Do who was a captain the South Vietnamese Navy In the main they tell stories that are short on politics and long on emotion In comparison Kissinger s two cents come off as banal and bland Kennedy has found lots of great footage to go with the first person testimony including home movies shot aboard the U S S Kirk and lots of film from inside and around the American Embassy in Saigon It s a well above average documentary that is marred by the hulking presence of one of the war s most controversial figures A list of upcoming screenings is posted on the film s website Marc Leepson Comments Off on New Doc on the Final Days in Saigon Posted on September 3rd 2014 in Documentaries History Comments are closed Contents Unsung Heroes Art Exhibit in Boston Bobbie Ann Mason Receives Kentucky Literary Honor Creative Writing Contest The Jeff Sharlet Memorial Award for Veterans Veterans in Politics radio The Photography

    Vietnam War a full sized replica of the Apollo 8 command module and rock star memorabilia concert tickets posters and autographs of icons such as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin For more info go to the Center s website which also contains a video The exhibition was organized by the Minnesota History Center in association with the Atlanta History Center the Chicago History Museum and the Oakland Museum of California It was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities Posted on July 3rd 2013 in Art Exhibits History Museums Vietnam Vet Bill Frassanito s Pioneering Work at the Battle of Gettysburg There s an excellent front page article in the June 29 Washington Post about the pioneering work done by Civil War historian and Vietnam veteran William A Frassanito above Frassanito 66 has spent virtually his entire career studying the photography and geography of the crucial Battle of Gettysburg the bloody engagement that took place 150 years ago from July 1 3 1863 Key parts of the hallowed battlefield have been restored because of his work Washington Post reporter Michael Ruane wrote Battlefield plaques have been added or corrected And his research has created the new specialty of examining an old picture for the information it contains His discoveries of the spots where the pictures were taken have helped the National Park Service restore important parts of the battlefield to their original appearance I ve actually created a hybrid field of study Frassinito told Ruane Academic historians traditionally view photos as Christmas tree ornaments just something that helps you spruce the book up They ve never really had the interest in the photo as a document As far as having a really solid impact on the historical thinking and understanding of the battlefield very few other people have contributed to it like Bill Frassanito said Gettysburg historian John Heiser of the National Park Service Posted on July 1st 2013 in History Photography Author Looking for Vietnam War Photos Lisa Lark the author of All They Left Behind Legacies of the Men and Women on The Wall a tribute to sixty one American servicemen and women who died in the Vietnam War that she put together in conjunction with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is at work on a second book This project scheduled for release in late 2014 will be a photographic history of the Vietnam War as told through the words and photographs of the men and women who served there Lark says The project will require some 500 photographs and Lark is looking for veterans who have photos from their time in the military whether in training on leave or in Vietnam and who would be willing to donate them for use in the book I will consider every photograph sent in and will use as many as I can in this project she says There are certain visual specifications that must be met and certain guidelines that we have to follow Sending in a photo does
