    north central Washington NCW Dale spearheaded the North Central Washington Prescribed Council he hosted meetings and brought representatives from councils in Florida to share their knowledge and experience with the NCW prescribed fire community The Creation of a Statewide Council Increasing interest in and need for prescribed fire across the state inspired Dale and others to propose the formation of a statewide council in 2011 The premise behind the statewide council is that although the challenges to prescribed burning may vary across different regions of the state there is power in collaboration The statewide council is able to address larger issues than regional councils and is positioned to more fruitfully engage with national efforts like those initiated by the Coalition of Prescribed Fire Councils www prescribedfire net Who We Are Prescribed fire councils generally maintain diverse membership representing the various groups that use research and regulate prescribed fire activity In Washington these groups include state and federal agencies non governmental organizations private industry tribes universities and more The statewide council now boasts representatives from over 50 organizations and agencies The Council is led by elected officials and a voluntary Steering Committee Council Officers Reese Lolley Chair The Nature Conservancy rlolley

    to employ prescribed burns on their lands by successfully addressing issues such as smoke management resource sharing public perception and fragmented landscapes Council members then broke out into smaller groups to have focused discussions on training needs models and opportunities Some of the training needs highlighted in these discussion included burn and firing boss training private contactor certification smoke management and forecasting workshop and a suppression skills workshop Attendees also shared existing training models that can be modified or expanded to fill some identified needs The day wrapped up with a hike around the Tierra Learning Center property including areas where fuels reduction techniques have been implemented recently and discussions about prescribed fire on private lands The group also toured the Tierra Forest Products biochar facility The second day the group focused on priorities for the Council and on next steps for increasing training opportunities across the state WPFC members appointed themselves to spearhead modified training exchanges specialized training opportunities and smoke management and suppression skills workshops among other actions Additionally the Council agreed to create an online space to post training needs and opportunities Javascript must be enabled to view the Photo Album on this page cache wst opf
