the Require Space After Bullet Proposal and my cheat sheet shows SPACES I try to cleanup every now and again Sandbox pages which are not password protected attract spam I ve made a bit of a mess for myself by providing alternative headings to support table of contents will have to resolve that at some point I ve learned the hard way that it doesn t make sense to provide alternatives I haven t yet looked at Creole 0 6 properly because I ve been kind of busy with work lately and setting up sites I ll try and check that out before the extension expires there seems to be some resistance moving forwards Slowly but surely there s no need to rush things through Thanks for all the hard work that has gone into the Creole specifications so far Cheers Mark Wharton 8190 9834 2559 Japan My Commitment I thought it might be a good time for me to make a public commitment to Creole That commitment is that whatever is decided for the final Creole spec here at wikicreole org I will support 100 in my wiki implementation barring ineptitude on my part to implement I might not agree or be happy with everything in the end but being involved in the process means I have nothing to be complain about and after all the sum of Creole should will be greater than its parts Sure all of this should be obvious nonetheless I believe it is worth stating here directly New Developments Just thought others might be interested I have recently discovered the Ragel State Machine Compiler which is a most excellent software development tool I have completely rewritten my Creole parser using Ragel and the construction is so much clearer and efficient it s unbelievable For example with my first attempt I have been able to build a single pass line buffered parser with limited forward scanning to determine the line type before passing the line content to the state machine It s all very rough at the moment but I plan to develop something for general release in the next couple of weeks and ideally before the spec is finalized so any last minute issues can be discussed Of course Yves Piguet s Nyctergatis is exceptional and the amount of work he has put into it should not be diminished I think the main issue we still need to resolve is escaping Like I mentioned earlier escaping whole Creole sequences does not work and that requirement causes trouble for the state machine approach at least it does for me Ragel Based Creole Parser Here is my command line tool to parse Creole input and output XHTML It is based on the Ragel State Machine Compiler The creole rl source file attached contains a mix of Ragel and C A creole c target file can be generated with the Ragel tools as follows ragel exe s creole rl rlgen cd exe G2 o creole c Note

it could be this spec that makes the unification possible in the long run If we could get OLPC involved CrossMark it would be another great asset IMHO the specification should not include any rendering i e X HTML suggestions It should express the meaning of the markup accompanied by a very precise syntax My general position is to keep the standard as simple but as rich as possible for the user two goals that are somewhat opposite while minimizing the effect on existing WikiMLs It should allow for a variety of writing styles so it can be accepted quickly I will express my opinion about NotNew in the next couple of days So after reading all of the discussions and proposals this is what I think Proposals differences with Creole0 4 Except in preformatted No Wiki a Tab form feed or vertical feed is treated as a space Except in preformatted No Wiki spaces at the beginning and at the end of a line are ignored Except in preformatted No Wiki two or more consecutive spaces are treated as one space only The different types of emphasis are dependent on the rendering In Headings allow for both and not mixed though at the end are taken literally In Headings allow for parsing of character markups see below In Headings allow for spaces before and after the markup In Headings any number of at the end of the line with or without subsequent spaces are ignored if the heading starts with For unordered lists allow for both and not mixed though In Quoting allow for both and not mixed though For Horizontal lines allow for any number of equal or greater than 4 Table headings should be usable for row and column headings In tables spaces before or after the

ghilbert org a site for hosting machine verifiable mathematical proofs I am also developer of Advogato and have been hacking on typesetting and publishing systems for over 20 years I like most of what I see here both in the draft specs and the community and discussion around them Simple is good and very few standards committees seem to realize that On the current controversies I think there should be a required space after the initial list bullet to disambiguate it from bold RequireSpaceAfterBulletProposal I like the syntax best for indicating table headers I see no problem with overloading asterisks in this way they already mean bold and tables are special Tables I m feeling the lack of an indented block markup Some content migrating to the Barghest is now hosted on an Oddmuse which uses an initial colon to indicate indented blocks much the same as bulleted lists and with similar logic for nesting I ve added this to Ghestalt as an extension but also think it wouldn t be out of place in the core Most of the discussion for this has been in Talk Quoting but it s all over the map Should we distill the main arguments into a single page say IndentedBlockProposal I see no reason to change italics emph and bold strong from the 0 3 spec I also have no real need for underlining or strikethrough Subscript is part of the markup on metamath org which is another source of content being adapted to the Barghest but most of that will end inside mathematics markup so it s not feeling urgent Change Italics Markup Proposal and Subscript or as escape within block pre markup Talk PreformattedAndNowiki No extra markup for inline quoting Talk Quoting and Talk WikiMarkupHasPresentationFlavor this discussion should probably be distilled
