and the frame the large line height in the sidebar but I really like the direction On a related effort I tried to prepare a web 2 0 ish look for this page but had a lot of problems with the current structure of the html You can see my attempt at http sheep art pl work creole Btw I do like the dog and don t mind the graphics staying there and the animal being the mascot of the project and even a symbol of the Creole wiki However it makes a poor Wikipedia logo for WikiCreole itself not to mention the JSPWiki symbol in it I was rather thinking of some kind of a simple yet recognizable symbol that people could put in their site s footer to announce that it supports Creole or on an edit with Creole button I prepared this favicon for this site JaredWilliams creole Any suggestions for better colours Not sure if the animal is really recognizable either a stretched squished version of Radomir s favicon above unless you know what your looking at But atleast a starting point RadomirDopieralski I think I have a preference to greens usability user friendliness and browns tradition standard official but that s just me I coudn t resist 2007 02 06 Spicing things up RadomirDopieralski As Creole matures it starts to attract more attention Soon we will have to direct our efforts more on advertising it and developing various plugins and converters than developing the standard This brings us to the topic of looks It didn t matter at the beginning but I think that we should improve the looks of this wiki a little to give it impression of silidness and professionalism and maybe even design some kind of good logo for Creole for those

expected words in the markup the existence of a structure by which a creole user could add their own arbitrary words to the syntax would be nice This is a significant item missing from the current specification when I look over it PRACTICAL IMPLEMENTATION A wiki designer using creole provides a means for the creole renderer to get a value for an arbitrary word For example foo word is saving Is saving is a Boolean flag whether the value is being sought because an edit is being saved 1 or because markup is being rendered 0 Such words are replaced with whatever foo returns prior to other rendering operations Example Foo name returns the name of the logged in user So saving a text of the form blah sig will be replaced by blah username before saving Foo numberofpages 1 is replaced by numberofpages and foo numberofpages 0 replaced by a count of the number of pages So on saving the word is preserved and on rendering is replaced by a page count Foo sitemanageraddress 1 is replaced by sitemanageraddress and foo sitemanageraddress 0 replaced by a fixed string johndoe gmail com which is modified when the current site manager address changes On saving the sitemanageraddress is preserved and on rendering replaced by the correct current email address Best FT2 For magic words that are processed at render time I would suggest to use the same syntax as for macros whatever that may be like CurrentDate Effectively these just become macros there is no need for a separate syntax For magic words that are processed at save time a character could be added in front e g CurrentDate Reusing the escape character tilde here would degrade nicely if for some reason save time processing didn t happen i e it

02 07 Then maybe we should prepare a number of UseCases you know the boring made up short stories about people with names starting with A B C Then we can try and accomodate them I think that we are in several places of Creole at points where there is not simple better and worse approach and that we have to choose based on the target audience RadomirDopieralski 2007 02 07 I agree with the point that users will probably start looking at existing pages and doing some smaller edits I think that is also a reason not to allow too many markup alternatives An experienced user like from Wikipedia just says Let s see how headings are done here and adopt it Users new to Wikis also want to find out how these headings are done Both will see it in the existing Wiki code or the formatting help of the Wiki It is just confusing if they find different variants of headings there Then they have to decide which variant they want to use and they probably begin to wonder why there are these alternatives SteffenSchramm 2007 02 07 Welcome Jim Gettman thank you for your input Feel free to add yourself to People if you wish I have several problems with the advices you posted in particular I fail to see how they are relevant to Creole markup standard I think they would be better directed at the browser and or wiki wysiwyg editors developers In particular you talk about interactive behavior preprocessing of the user input and design of data entry forms etc This has nothing to do with a text markup format The only one of your advices that I can see directly applied to Creole is the last point Present data in the form optimal for the user s task which in case of Creole would be editing the page s text Would you feel bad if we removed your advices at least the ones about interactive user interface On an unrelated thing I can see you re using rather unusual patter for the second level bullet lists two asterisks seprated by a space I ve seen it only once before Can I ask you where did you pick that up I m curious and it could also help Creole more experience is always better RadomirDopieralski 2007 02 08 While I agree with the sentiment stated in the title of this page I also feel it s a red herring I don t hear anybody honestly concerned about the amount of CPU time required to parse Wiki markup It s going to be negligible in any case although of course it s always possible to bloat that by having layers of interpreted languages etc I have two concerns that I feel make the machine work harder tends to sweep under the rug Both affect usability directly First complex rules can be mysterious and confusing To use one current example if a space is sometimes

I nfo Hello Mark great work I also like your extensions of Creole I think I will steal some of your ideas especially the option to use both and I am however a little curious about what you need that italic for isn t italic enough RadomirDopieralski 2006 12 27 Thanks for your comments The makes sense as part of the table of contents extension another good idea from JSPWiki

the phase of looking for the best solutions in the markup area as you can see it s not perfect yet If you start making the plugin now be prepared for changes in the specification On the other hand if you do it now Creole can be modified based on your experiences to make it easier both for you and for other developers to implement We are looking forward to working with you RadomirDopieralski 2006 09 10 Radomir thanks for the welcome My plan is implement early and keep up with changes in the spec I ll publish a TiddlyWiki with the Creole plugin that way you guys can use it for prototyping and testing if you like The Creole TiddlyWiki can also be used to test for collisions since TiddlyWiki has alpha releases of plugins that support other wiki syntax including MediaWiki TWiki SocialText and PBWiki it will be possible to include say both the CreoleFormat plugin and the MediaWikiFormat plugin and see the potential collisions Of course the outcome of such a collision would not be the same as if the collision actually occured in MediaWiki but at least the collision can be detected MartinBudden 2006 09 11 Hi Martin Thanks so much for your contributions to WikiCreole Being able to use it with Tiddlywiki is super cool All the test cases I ve run locally work great but I was wondering if you could set up a public Tiddlywiki where I could run test cases and keep them public If you could I would really appreciate it ChuckSmith 2006 12 06 Chuck I m happy to set up a public TiddlyWiki where you can run test cases I m a bit busy at the moment so it will probably take me a week or two to get
