  • Ecoliteracy & Systems Thinking: Professional Development for Classroom Teachers | Wildwoods Foundation
is the completion of a long held objective of the Wildwoods Foundation recipient of the 2012 Governor s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award for Environmental Education for the Full Circle curriculum This is something that s been on our drawing board for years said Wildwoods Foundation executive director Dwain Wilson It was actually first suggested to us by Julie Slayton Ph D who was at the time head of research and evaluation for the Los Angeles Unified School District We were looking at the impact that our Full Circle program had on the dramatic increase in science test scores at a participating school Wilson continued Dr Slayton pointed out that the increase took place over a series of years and measured the performance of different students She argued that since we were working with the same core group of teachers during that time then most likely our biggest impact was our introduction of hands on methods and techniques to those classroom teachers So the idea of expanding our work with teachers is something we ve wanted to do for a long time Unfortunately there is a dire need for such science based professional development opportunities Back in 2011 UC Berkeley did a study called High Hopes Few Opportunities about the state of elementary school science education in California said Wilson It was scary Especially considering that this is happening in the state that has been key in the aerospace industry and information technology The report is indeed scary Among its many disheartening findings the report showed that 40 of elementary teachers in grades K 5 reported that their students receive less than 60 minutes per week of science instruction And while the teachers participating in the study reported that only about one third of them felt very prepared to teach science it seems that little is being done to address the situation since more than 85 have not received any science related professional development in the last three years With the problem so big I know that it can sometimes feel like we re tilting at windmills said Wilson But we believe that Wildwoods has a privileged insight from our nearly 15 years of working with Los Angeles schools and students and a proven track record of successful ecologically based programming That insight is something that we want to share with teachers The support of the Max Factor Family Foundation is making it possible to bring this idea to life When we began speaking with the Factor Foundation they made it clear that they were interested in something that would have a potential ripple effect impact more so than simply funding direct service programming Wilson said We shared with them a short 2 page overview of the class that clicked with them and led to a request for a full proposal We are so excited about bringing this project to life and bringing these experiences to Los Angeles teachers said Wilson These inquiry based methods will help them create more
