    Denison Heaton Appliquè quilt Made by Sophia Myers Pearce Baltimore Maryland 1840 Top and backing cotton Length 111 281 9 cm Width 112 in 286 4 cm 1996 11 Museum purchase and partial gift of Helen Denison Heaton 1963 48 Counterpane bed cover Owned by Frances Wardale Lieber McAllister Printed by John Hewson Philadelphia Pennsylvania 1780 1810 Cotton Length 106 269 9 cm Width 103 262 3 cm 1963 48 Textiles and Needlework Collection Henry Francis du Pont loved textiles for their colors patterns and textures From quilts to gowns samplers to bed hangings Winterthur s collection includes some of the finest textiles made or used in America Since du Pont s death in 1969 the collection has continued to grow and now includes about 20 000 objects Winterthur s extensive collection of American samplers and needlework pictures many of which are on display in the house and the Galleries includes one of the earliest samplers known to have been worked in America Sarah Stone s band sampler dated 1678 a beautiful Philadelphia silkwork picture worked by Mary King in 1754 and a unique Berlin woolwork picture embroidered by Olevia Rebecca Parker in 1852 at the Lombard Street School a public school in Philadelphia that educated children from the African American community Quilts and other bedcovers are another strength of the textiles collection and feature counterpanes embroidered blankets and both Jacquard and float weave coverlets Highlights include Mary Foot s 1778 embroidered bed rug from southeastern Connecticut and Sophia Myers Pearce s chintz appliqué quilt made in Baltimore about 1840 Winterthur s collection of printed cottons and linens is among the best in the world Among its rare objects is one of only three counterpanes printed by John Hewson a Philadelphia printer active in the late 18th and early 19th

    Scientific Research Analysis Laboratory Textile Conservation Recent Acquisitions Publications Printed Textiles British and American Cottons a Winterthur Primer Articles Recent Acquisitions Online Collections Collections Library Recent Acquisitions Recent Acquisitions Celebrating Early 20th Century Gardening A Collection of Lantern Slides The library recently acquired a collection of 413 lantern slides depicting gardens and estates in the United States and Europe All but a dozen are in color and most date from the 1920s and 1930s Lantern slides transparent glass slides projected onto a surface were introduced in 1849 ten years after the invention of photography Images once seen by individuals or small groups in photographic form could now be seen by larger audiences This new format opened the way for expanding the use of photography in entertainment and educational arenas Many of the American slides document plantings and gardens in three northeastern states including New York Pennsylvania and New Jersey Among the gardens and estates represented are those of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt Hyde Park New York publisher and railroad magnate Oakleigh Thorne Millbrook New York and other individuals of means who were successfully engaged in finance and business But not all of the lantern slides depict gardens in the northeastern United States We have slides that record a garden visiting sojourn through Europe possibly just France in 1924 others show garden plans for modest country or town houses some portray California gardens and some illustrate perennials annuals and labeled plants and flowers When a photographer is attributed Edward Van Altena 1873 1968 is credited Van Altena was born in Milwaukee and moved to Brooklyn when he was five years old It is said that his mother gave him his appreciation for art and that he became a photographer as a result In 1888 he started working at a studio on
