    Scientific Research Analysis Laboratory Textile Conservation Online Collections Collections Collection Care Conservation Conservation at Winterthur Paintings Conservation Painting conservator Mary McGinn cleaning a painting Paintings Conservation The Paintings conservator is responsible for the care of 381 paintings in the Winterthur collection as well as their frames and the painted surfaces on other objects such as furniture and clock dials Paintings conservators address the structural problems of paintings such as torn or deteriorated canvas or stretchers that cause distortion and paint loss as well as the paint layers and varnishes applied to them Paint on any substrate canvas wood or metal may begin to flake due to physical damage corrosion or dimensional changes in the substrate caused by unstable relative humidity Wood and fabrics like canvas absorb and release moisture as the relative humidity varies resulting in dimensional changes Since the paint layer does not absorb moisture at the same rate it cannot change with the substrate and the resulting stress can cause it to flake off Varnishes and coatings applied to the surface age and darken with time and may require cleaning or removal and replacement Frames are an integral part of paintings visually and structurally since they provide protection and the means to hang a painting Traditional frames are composed of wood compo a plaster like mixture of chalk glue resin and oil and various gilt and painted finishes that are subject to abrasion and physical damage that causes breakage and loss of decorative elements Preventive Conservation Like other parts of Winterthur s collection paintings are maintained at a stable temperature and relative humidity of 50 and protected from excessive light that can accelerate aging of the varnish and fading of some pigments Proper framing requires a backing board to protect the canvas and secure hardware to insure safe hanging 1979 225 A B Gift of Mr and Mrs Robert L Raley Painting on Glass Glass is among the most challenging substrates artists used for paintings because of its fragility and the smooth surface that makes paint adhesion difficult This reverse painted glass panel 1979 0225 was made in China for the American market sometime between 1804 and 1810 The image is based on a print by Samuel Harris published in Boston MA in 1804 The artist applied oil paint to one side of a glass panel but the image is viewed through the glass so we see the first brush strokes the artist made The central image of Liberty was painted very thinly with little or no layering The image appears nearly identical whether viewed from the front or the back In the background and legend the gold stars and lettering were applied first and additional layers painted around and behind the gold The paint layer is in generally good condition but open joins in the wood backing board allowed dirt and dust to accumulate on the back of the panel Soft brushes and cosmetic sponges were used to gently remove the loose dirt and debris Left Painting

    Paper Conservation Paper Conservator Joan Irving examines a print under the microscope Paper Conservation Paper conservation cares for almost 5 000 prints and drawings including some of the most important prints of the early national era by artists such as Peter Pelham and Paul Revere In addition the collection includes pastel paintings on paper and early German American fraktur as well as paper based materials such as hat boxes and several rooms of historic wallpaper Winterthur s prints and drawings are found on display in period rooms and on reserve in a large study collection that provides a rich resource for scholars in many disciplines Paper is vulnerable to many kinds of damage tears creases soiling overall discoloration and stains Exposure to excessive light heat and high humidity accelerate its deterioration These conditions also threaten the images on paper and may cause flaking media color shifts or fading of inks and other design materials Paper objects suffer additional damage in storage or on exhibit when in contact with acidic mats folders and boxes Frames that are too small or that do not provide adequate space between the glazing and the object can cause additional damage Paper conservators focus on repairing and supporting the structure of the paper object and reducing discoloration and acidity when appropriate Repairs with pressure sensitive tapes and poor quality adhesives often must be removed to prevent ongoing damage Preventive Conservation Winterthur s paper collections are kept in a controlled environment in the period rooms and a preservation environment of 65F and 45 RH in the Maps and Prints study collection This environment reduces the rate at which paper deteriorates and prevents the growth of mold All objects are stored in alkaline mats or folders that help protect them during handling and study A Preservation Housing Specialist insures that all framing is safe and appropriate for the object A Winter s Tale was left untreated This print A Winter s Tale was left untreated Corner of the strainer showing the torn and damaged print Theatrical Prints When Winterthur acquired a series of four rare prints 1968 0155 0158 published by the illustrious English print dealers John and Josiah Boydell they were in completely original but fragile condition The prints published from 1790 1805 depict scenes from Shakespeare s plays The production and sale of Boydell s Shakespeare prints tell a story of 18th century entrepreneurship and ingenuity They were part of a larger scheme that included a gallery of paintings by renowned English painters such as George Romney and Benjamin West and an illustrated edition of Shakespeare s plays The prints had suffered severe staining in the margins from their original wooden strainers and the papers were very fragile and brittle Treating the prints a technical challenge in itself was complicated because the prints were in period mounts and frames that would be altered if full treatment was to proceed It was determined that one print Winter s Tale and its frame would not be treated but

    Furniture Conservation Lighting Specialists Objects Conservation Paintings Conservation Paper Conservation Preservation Housing Preventive Conservation Scientific Research Analysis Laboratory Textile Conservation Publications Printed Textiles British and American Cottons a Winterthur Primer Articles Conservation at Winterthur Books Library Material Conservation Documentation Image Specialist Furniture Conservation Lighting Specialists Objects Conservation Paintings Conservation Paper Conservation Preservation Housing Preventive Conservation Scientific Research Analysis Laboratory Textile Conservation Online Collections Collections Collection Care Conservation Conservation at Winterthur Scientific Research Analysis Laboratory Jennifer Mass Senior Conservation Scientist examines a cross section under the microscope Scientific Research and Analysis Laboratory SRAL The scientific analysis of objects is carried out to answer questions about an object s condition technology of manufacture history and authenticity Answers to these questions can be critical for formulating an appropriate conservation treatment Winterthur s well equipped laboratory includes a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer FTIR a laboratory based and handheld energy dispersive x ray fluorescence spectrometers XRF a scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive x ray spectroscopy SEM EDS a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer GC MS Raman spectrometer reflective and transmitted ultra violet and visible light spectrometers a near infrared reflectance spectrometer a liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer LC MS Many types of analysis can be done non destructively without taking a sample In other cases technology has advanced to the point that only a very tiny sample is necessary Windsor settee made about 1800 by Ebenezer Tracy Sr in Norwich Connecticut 1959 1662 A Paint Question A Windsor settee 1959 1662 from Winterthur s collection was analyzed to understand its finish history and to compare the technology of the finishes to the period literature This settee was chosen for scientific study because of its rare form and for its extensive finish history The settee is a rare sack back settee with an s curve upper rail and scrolled handholds from Norwich Connecticut New London County ca 1795 1803 It was made by Ebenezer Tracy Sr 1744 1803 and is stamped with his brand under the seat Windsor furniture was commonly painted green in the late eighteenth century so that the pieces would be pleasingly camouflaged in a garden landscape In fact a French visitor to Philadelphia in 1790s observed that the fashion was wooden chairs painted green like garden furniture in France Winterthur s Scientific Research and Analysis Laboratory uses a number of nondestructive and minimally invasive instrumental methods of analysis to identify the materials used to make and conserve objects of art To understand the finish history of the settee shown here and to study this history on an atomic and molecular level tiny samples of its painted finish were removed with a scalpel blade These samples are approximately one milligram the size of the period at the end of this sentence Once removed the samples are embedded in a clear polyester resin mounting material and then the mounted sample is cut polished and viewed under a microscope in cross section end on to reveal the finish layers A popular green paint recipe from this

    Winterthur Books Library Material Conservation Documentation Image Specialist Furniture Conservation Lighting Specialists Objects Conservation Paintings Conservation Paper Conservation Preservation Housing Preventive Conservation Scientific Research Analysis Laboratory Textile Conservation Publications Printed Textiles British and American Cottons a Winterthur Primer Articles Conservation at Winterthur Books Library Material Conservation Documentation Image Specialist Furniture Conservation Lighting Specialists Objects Conservation Paintings Conservation Paper Conservation Preservation Housing Preventive Conservation Scientific Research Analysis Laboratory Textile Conservation Online Collections Collections Collection Care Conservation Conservation at Winterthur Textile Conservation Textile conservator Joy Gardiner works on stain reduction Textile Conservation Textile conservators are responsible for a large collection of approximately 20 000 objects including window treatments bed curtains rugs costumes quilts and coverlets needlework and upholstery Damage to textiles comes from many sources including unstable environmental conditions that cause mold and staining from high humidity and exposure to excessive light that weakens and discolors textile fibers and fades dyes and colorants When abrasive acidic soil from the environment becomes embedded in the fibers it weakens and disfigures the textile Stains and wear from past usage also contribute to deterioration Some dyes and finishes used in the production of textiles are inherently unstable and may case serious damage Textile conservators support and stabilize the structure of textiles while reducing stains and degradation where ever possible Preventive Conservation Winterthur s textiles are stored in stable environmental conditions using acid free archival quality tissues boxes and fabrics To prevent creases which cause localized damage to the fibers textiles are rolled or padded with acid fre tissue Textiles on open exhibit are cleaned regularly by careful low suction vacuuming to remove environmental dust Lighting specialists are particularly vigilant in lighting textiles and keep the levels very low If a textile becomes too weak to remain on exhibit it is retired to the study collection and replaced with a textile in better condition or a reproduction fabric For upholstered furniture textile conservators work with furniture conservators to preserve existing fabrics or replace them with reproductions Chair seat with severe staining and tide lines A Damaging Drip A side chair 1957 518 4 made in Boston about 1800 had the misfortune of being under a drip from a slow leak in an air handler on the floor above The leak severely stained the striped silk and cotton upholstery fabric The fabric woven in the late 18th century is not original to the chair but was installed as the show fabric at a time when common practice involved tacking it directly to the seat rail To avoid causing additional damage to the seat rail the textile was treated without removing it from the chair The leak caused both staining and a tide line on the seat fabric Tide lines occur when contaminants in the water and soluble degradation products in the fabric and upholstery padding are pulled along the fabric by wicking or capillary action to a point where evaporation takes place The contaminants and degradation products are left behind forming a tide line that disfigures and
