    control of them at all times Beyond these basic guidelines the Herp Society appreciates the concerns expressed about possible health issues that could be associated with bringing herps out to meetings and takes suitable precautions to prevent problems from arising In regard to weather conditions we rely on the good judgement of herp owners to decide for themselves if it s safe to bring their animals to a meeting Many of us occasionally need to take a reptile or amphibian out in poor weather such as making a trip to the vet or purchasing and bringing home a new animal so the keeper would be best placed to determine if their herp can tolerate any such outing To help avoid the potential spread of communicable illnesses we provide hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes so visitors can sanitize their hands in between handling different animals This also provides a good teachable experience for newer herp keepers who might not yet have learned this important aspect of everyday husbandry Visitors who bring an animal always have the option to leave it in its carrier or if they choose to take it out they can request that other people not handle it We have found herp keepers to be very respectful of each other s animals in this regard Over the last 20 years of WNYHS meetings one of the things attendees have consistently enjoyed the most is having a chance to show off their favorite herps or invertebrates and discuss them with fellow herp enthusiasts We believe it s important to provide this unique opportunity to members and visitors who would like to participate in this way while also following safe husbandry practices There is never an expectation or obligation for anyone to bring a reptile or amphibian with them to a

    Aures Bob Krantz Herpetological Research Grant is given in honor and memory of two of the founding members of the Western New York Herpetological Society Marv and Bob were passionate about improving captive herp husbandry and conserving herps in the wild through scientific research Current members of the Society continue to further these endeavors with their membership dues and by hosting the WNYHS Reptile Show The Aures Krantz Grant is awarded annually for research in one of the following categories New York State Herpetology Student Research in Herpetology Reptile and Amphibian Conservation Reptile and Amphibian Captive Management Husbandry and Propagation and Herpetology Education The recipient of the 2015 Marv Aures Bob Krantz Herpetological Research Grant is Alexander Robillard from SUNY College at Oneonta Mr Robillard s topic of study is entitled Determining the Status of the Wood Turtle Glyptemys insculpta in New York State As always it was difficult to choose a winner from the excellent field of applicants and the WNYHS thanks all of the individuals who submitted their grant proposals for the 2015 award Welcome About History Events Schedule Monthly Meetings September 2015 October 2015 November 2015 December 2015 Note About Bringing Herps to Events 2015 Reptile Show

    in one of the following areas New York State Herpetology Student Research in Herpetology Herpetological Conservation Captive Management Husbandry and Propagation of Herpetological Species Community Education and Outreach in Herpetology When accepting the grant the recipient agrees to abide by all federal state and local laws and to acknowledge the Western New York Herpetological Society in any publications or public presentations that result from the research Grant funds may not be used as salary tuition or to pay the costs of publication Recipients should inform the Grant Committee when the funded project is completed and are required to submit a summary of their research for publication in the WNYHS newsletter or present a program at a WNYHS membership meeting Proposals should include Statement of the objectives of the proposal Which of the above categories the proposal is being submitted for Description of Materials and Methods Complete budget not to exceed 750 Brief resume of the applicant if an individual If the applicant is an organization background information on that organization should be included Letters of support from collaborating partners or institutions are encouraged student applicants must include a letter of support from a faculty adviser Anticipated completion date for the project Proposals will only be accepted electronically and can be emailed to brenda wnyherpsociety org Please include all documents in one attachment when emailing the application Letters of support may be submitted separately The Marvin R Aures Bob Krantz Herpetological Grant will give preference but is not limited to chelonian research topics Applications should be brief and concise We prefer complete proposal packages that do not exceed five double spaced pages excluding literature citations applicant s resume and letter s of recommendation Applications must be received by 31 January 2016 Welcome About History Events Schedule Monthly Meetings September 2015 October
