    facilitated by a Community Group Lead Volunteer Communities do not have the same formal structure as our local groups which have formal committees AGMs and bank accounts The key aspects of a community is to 1 Be social supportive issue or fundraising based 2 To provide a social space either virtual or physical for people to meet share experiences support each other and socialise Where agreed a community s focus could be on campaigning or fundraising If focused on fundraising the key aim of the community is to raise funds for Diabetes UK which will support our work for people living with and at risk of diabetes Overall purpose of volunteer role We are looking for a friendly dynamic self motivated volunteer to set up a new community The community will support people affected by diabetes Communities need to meet local need and could include those that are focused on a specific geographic area focused on fundraising for Diabetes UK aimed at people with Type 1 diabetes aimed at parents of children with type 1 diabetes serve rural communities be based within a University be fitness health based be activity based e g walking bike book group for specific Black Asian Minority or Ethnic minority communities or for a based on a specific language group for Lesbian Gay Bisexual or Transgender communities focused on a particular campaigning issue With support and training from your local Diabetes UK team we will support you to drive the creation of a new community We will be able to provide ongoing support as your community grows including resources around campaigning and fundraising where needed This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to make a difference to the lives of people affected by diabetes Key aspects of the volunteer role Work with your local Diabetes UK team to agree and define the aims of your community and who it will target Promote the community to potential new members Organise and facilitate community activities in response to the preferences and needs of your community Be the main point of contact with local Diabetes UK staff for the community Manage your community within the framework of the Community Agreement including producing a short annual summary report on your Community s activity What we are looking for A friendly approachable and proactive person who is interested in building new networks Ability to communicate and build strong relationships with people from a diverse range of backgrounds Ability to facilitate discussions and to help a community reach a consensus when planning activities Be self motivated and engage with others without close supervision Good social media skills with an ability to build an online presence and use new media to build online communities optional What we can offer you A full induction support and training to enable you to set up your community A named person within Diabetes UK to act as your key contact Support developing a project action plan Support around identifying and linking to relevant networks
