    mission hit closer to home than the quilters imagined when the first woman from Oregon Army CPL Jessica A Ellis was killed May 11 in Iraq Her death further rallied the quilters and the community around their project with businesses and townspeople donating supplies volunteering to cut fabric and eventually helping fund travel costs for 14 quilters to attend the unveiling In addition to Birtwistle women involved in the quilting project who attended the unveiling included Mary Anne Macnab Mary Lou Massie Marlene Wallace Sharon Simantel Mavis Olsen Sheila Weber Marylea Sanders Elizabeth Hazel Camille Hurd Linda Simkus Penny Eakin and Julie Cordahl The ceremony s keynote speaker Army BG Loree K Sutton director of the Defense Center of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury saluted the quilters efforts noting that in addition to being a tribute the quilt would comfort family and friends of fallen servicewomen I am one of those friends BG Sutton added I worked with the mother of Army 2LT Emily J T Perez who died in 2006 in Iraq I will see her name here and it will be a reminder of her loss but also of her life her service and her sacrifice Following the unveiling BG Sutton and the family of Army SPC Toccara R Green found SPC Green s name on the quilt The 23 year old died when an improvised explosive device detonated near her unit Aug 14 2005 Also in attendance was the mother of Marine CPL Jessica Parcell who was killed Feb 7 2007 while supporting combat operations with the Lioness Team in Iraq The quilters work is a reminder BG Sutton added to remember and honor those who serve and those who make the ultimate sacrifice Let us renew our dedication to making their sacrifices count

    War World War II 1941 1945 focuses on recruiting training and jobs Prisoners of War women under enemy fire service around the world and the women s roles at war s end are depicted in Overseas with the Military World War II 1941 1945 The final WWII case Serving on the Homefront World War II 1941 1945 features Women Airforce Service Pilots Civil Defense workers and the Cadet Nurse Corps USNS Comfort Quilt features the quilt made aboard the USNS Comfort during her 2003 deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom A panel exhibit Sweet Victory includes a copy of the Women s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 as well as photographs and artifacts that depict the controversy and testimony surrounding the legislation that gave women a permanent place in the US Armed Forces Called to Duty Korean War 1950 1953 presents the experiences of servicewomen in America s Forgotten War including treating the wounded world wide service in the burgeoning Cold War and the stateside recruiting and recall of women American Servicewomen in the Global War on Terror pays tribute to servicewomen serving in Afghanistan and Iraq Era of Conflict Vietnam War 1964 1975 featuring rare personal photographs
