    keynote address wreath layings and the Memorial s signature event the scattering of rose petals in tribute to departed comrades Members of the public are invited to join in the personal tribute segment of the program Also at the Memorial for Memorial Day commemorative activities are two new special exhibits that pay tribute to the women who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq The first When Janey Comes Marching Home Portraits of Women Combat Veterans is a collection of portraits and accompanying oral histories of 44 of today s women warriors The second a display honoring the servicewomen of Enduring and Iraqi Freedom speaks to their wartime experiences through the memorabilia of 101st Airborne Division soldier Cpl Jessica Ellis who was killed in action May 11 2008 in Baghdad Iraq Also on display is the special In Memoriam Book located in the Memorial s Hall of Honor The book a living memorial that is updated as necessary includes the picture awards and decorations and biographical information of the 129 military women who have lost their lives in these wars The exhibits are free and open to the public For more information call 703 533 1155 or 800 222 2294 The

    military uniforms and gone to war This very compelling exhibition is a unique look at contemporary women warriors I was very impressed with the photographer s formatting and composition of the portraits along with the personal stories of the women said retired Air Force Brigadier General Wilma Vaught Women s Memorial Foundation president All of the elements combine to create the feel of a personal relationship with each woman It s a powerful experience When Janey Comes Marching Home is free and open to the public daily from 8 a m to 7 p m The public is also invited to a special Meet the Artists reception on June 9 from 11 30 a m to 1 30 p m RSVP to 703 533 1155 or hq womensmemorial org to reserve a seat This exhibition and the accompanying publication were made possible by generous grants from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities the National Endowment for the Arts and the College of Humanities and Sciences Virginia Commonwealth University The exhibition was organized by the Visual Arts Center of Richmond where it premiered September 2008 The exhibition tour is administered by the Anderson Gallery School of the Arts Virginia Commonwealth University
