  • Please Support the H-2B Reform Bills in Senate & House - Washington State Nursery & Landscape Association
    the Strengthen Employment and Seasonal Opportunities Now SEASON Act H R 3918 The introduction follows the prior week s introduction of the bipartisan Save Our Small and Seasonal Businesses Act of 2015 S 2225 by Senators Tillis R NC Mikulski D MD Cassidy R LA and Warner D VA While the bills are slightly different both the House and Senate bills would address the key issues that employers continue to face with the H 2B program Both bills would exempt returning workers from the 66 000 annual cap streamline the H 2B process provide for a fair wage formula allow for the use of private wage surveys and address the problems stemming from the new H 2B regulations The House bill goes further in that it would essentially remove the Department of Labor DOL from the H 2B process The Senate bill includes provisions not in the House bill that would require greatly increased coordination between the Departments of State and Homeland Security in terms of the cap count as well as improving public transparency about the cap numbers Now is the time to urge your two U S Senators and your Representative in the House to support these bills

  • 2014 NW Region’s Horticulture Value of Sales at 1.38 Billion, increased 15 percent from 2009 - Washington State Nursery & Landscape Association
    U S Department of Agriculture s National Agricultural Statistics Service NASS released the 2014 Census of Horticultural Specialties report which shows that U S horticulture operations sold a total of 13 8 billion in floriculture nursery and specialty crops in 2014 up 18 percent since 2009 The number of horticulture operations in the United States increased 8 percent during this time to 23 221 This report contains the results of the tenth Census of Horticultural Specialties said Chairman of the Agricultural Statistics Board Mark Harris First conducted in 1889 the horticulture census provides data on industries for which there are no other comprehensive data sources It is a valuable tool to highlight the contribution horticulture growers bring to state level economies whether in sales earned or expenses paid for hired labor Horticulture production was concentrated in 10 states which accounted for 65 percent of all U S horticulture sales in 2014 California 2 88 billion Florida 1 80 billion and Oregon 932 million led the nation in sales All operations that reported producing and selling 10 000 or more of horticultural crops on the 2012 Census of Agriculture were included in this special study Alaska showed a 35 percent increase on the total number of operations reporting horticultural specialty crops sold between 2009 and 2014 while total sales increased 65 percent to 16 8 million Idaho showed a 6 percent increase on the total number of operations reporting horticultural specialty crops sold between 2009 and 2014 while total sales decreased 11 percent to 67 4 million Idaho ranked third in the United States in vegetable seed sales Oregon showed an 8 percent increase on the total number of operations reporting horticultural specialty crops sold between 2009 and 2014 while total sales increased 12 percent to 932 million Oregon ranked first

    nature and timing of the application processes are subject to change from year to year The following is an overview of our financial assistance programs in more detail Community Forestry Assistance CFA Grants download the RFP and Grant Application Acceptable projects should focus on urban forestry program development or innovative programs that educate staff the public and decision makers about the benefits of trees and or proper tree care and management Examples include but are not limited to developing urban forestry management plans tree ordinances policy manuals tree canopy analyses website development and curriculum development Match in kind or financial is required Tree Inventory Grants download the RFP and Grant Application Tree inventories are a critical tool for urban forest management A public tree inventory will be performed on behalf of successful applicant communities by a qualified consultant through a contractual agreement with DNR No money changes hands however a Memorandum of Understanding between DNR and successful applicants is required Successful communities must provide a report that describes an expected course of action toward community forest management to UCF within one year of receiving the inventory data Tree Planting Grants download the RFP and Grant Application These grants are only available to communities who have earned the Tree City USA Award as this designation is a minimum measure of cities capacity expertise and commitment to ensure that trees are properly planted and cared for A 3 year maintenance plan and planting inspections by an ISA Certified Arborist are required Match in kind or financial is required Arbor Day Tree Reimbursements download the Reimbursement Form Communities who have earned the Tree City USA designation can be reimbursed for the costs or a portion thereof associated with planting landscape sized trees at their annual Arbor Day celebration Some restrictions apply Documentation of
