    portion are selected from the CPH Plant List which is included with the study materials purchased from WSNLA Photo ID will be required to take the exam Member Student Rate 90 Non Member Rate 160 Examinations are based on the Association s study materials purchased through WSNLA and the Sustainable Gardening handbook available from WSU Examinations are open to WSNLA members and non members alike Information about the CPH exams Section 1 Plant Identification 45 minutes In this section you will be asked to identify 40 live nursery samples by their botanical and common name The plant samples will be nursery grown stock in containers or B B For 8 of these samples you will have to give more information It will include 10 year Hheight under normal growing conditions 1 6 10 10 20 35 blooming time as two months Jan Feb Feb Mar etc and color best exposure and if the plant is evergreen semi evergreen or deciduous After this section the proctors will go over the plants so you will have some idea as to how well you did Section 2 General Knowledge 50 minutes This section has 100 multiple choice questions taken from information in the Sustainable Gardening manual available through WSU and from Naming of Plants study material from WSNLA The goal is to test your understanding of horticulture on a variety of topics Chapters that you will be tested on are Botany Soils and Fertilizers Basic Entomology Plant Disease Diagnosing Plant Problems Lawns IPM Weed Management and Pruning Section 3 Landscape Practices 50 minutes This section includes 50 multiple choice questions related to landscape design and the installation and care of ornamental plants Material is from the Sustainable Gardening manual chapters Sustainable Landscape Design Woody Landscape Plants Herbaceous Ornamental Plants Pruning and Water Quality

    Breakfast Networking 8 45 10 15 Living on Top of Groundwater Why does Thurston County Public Health Care About Pesticides What resources can we offer to you and your clients Jennifer Johnson has worked for Thurston County Public Health and Social Services for 14 years as an Environmental Health Education and Outreach Specialist She practices organic land care on her own ten acres and knows firsthand why herbicides can seem easier than hand weeding She studies the health effects of pesticides on people and wildlife and those studies are what make weeding much more attractive to her than the use of herbicides 10 15 10 30 break 10 30 12 00 noon Plight of the Pollinators and How You Can Help Mark Emrich 12 00 1 00pm Lunch 1 00 5 00 pm Landscaping for Water Wildlife Erica Guttman In this session Erica will discuss principles of sustainable landscaping from the joint perspectives of wildlife enhancements and Green Stormwater Infrastructure Topics include overview of stormwater science green stormwater BMPs designing for birds butterflies and other small wildlife planting design principles and a hands on design activity working with drought tolerant and native plants Erica Guttman has been a hands on environmental educator for over 30 years and has led WSU Thurston County Extension s water resources work since 1997 She leads workshops for over 2 000 participants annually on a range of topics relating to protecting and conserving water resources and habitat including rain garden design and construction low impact development techniques sustainable landscaping practices and shoreline stewardship She has authored and contributed to a number of publications and videos to help landowners protect water resources including handbooks on rain gardens residential scale LID shoreline revegetation winter twig identification and videos guiding residents in building rain gardens in the Pacific
