    Regulatory Email to a Friend EPA Announces Revision to Rules for Pesticide Use on Farms Thursday October 01 2015 0 Comments Share October 01 2015 The Environmental Protection Agency EPA announced several revisions to rules governing pesticide use on farms to better protect farmworkers on Monday September 28 2015 The revised rules are designed to modernize safeguards for agricultural laborers and make them comparable to safeguards that protect employees in other industries Some of the biggest changes include the following prohibiting children from handling pesticides requiring workers to be at least 18 years old to mix load or apply the chemicals on fields and require mandatory pesticide training for farmworkers each year instead of every five years There are an estimated two million U S and migrant farmworkers and the EPA reports between 1 800 and 3 000 incidents involving pesticide exposure each year The current worker protection standards have not been revised since they were introduced in 1992 The EPA stated that the revisions will be published in the Federal Register within the next 60 days To view an article from The Wall Street Journal click here To view more information on the revisions from the EPA click here

  • EPA Updates Worker Protection Standards for Farmworkers - Washington State Nursery & Landscape Association
    for Farmworkers EPA announced today stronger protections for the nation s two million agricultural workers and their families working on farms forests nurseries and greenhouses EPA revised the existing Worker Protection Standard WPS 40 CFR part 170 to reduce occupational pesticide exposure and incidents of related illness among agricultural workers and pesticide handlers The final rule has not yet been published The new requirements will go into effect the first week of December 2016 The exact date has not been determined Highlights of the revisioninclude Employers must ensure that workers and handlers receive pesticide safety training every year Employers must post warning signs around treated areas when the product used has a restricted entry interval REI greater than 48 hours Workers who must enter a treated area when an REI is in effect must be given information about the pesticide used the specific task s to be performed the personal protective equipment PPE required by the label and the amount of time the worker may remain in the treated area Employers must maintain and make available to workers and handlers their designated representatives and treating medical personnel upon request the pesticide application specific information and the SDSs for pesticides used on the establishment for two years Handlers must suspend application if they are aware of any person in the application exclusion zone other than a properly trained and equipped handler involved in the application See comparison chart of the new protections to the existing protections here http www2 epa gov sites production files 2015 09 documents comparison chart wps pdf Read the one page fact sheet here http www2 epa gov sites production files 2015 09 documents worker protection factsheet pdf Learn all the details here http www2 epa gov pesticide worker safety revisions worker protection standard SOURCE Copyright 2015
